Exploration of the public use of painted images in Siena cathedral concentrating on two 13th c. icons of the Virgin and Child. Examines how the space of the cathedral was arranged from the profane to the sacred; the use of icons of the Virgin and Child in city processions to the cathedral; the 13th c. construction of the Cappella delle Grazie to house one of the icons; the commissioning of a third Madonna, Duccio's Maestà, in 1308; the addition of more images in the later Middle Ages; and concludes with a section addressing church ritual and its political significance.
