Examines Jewish art in Russia 1880-1914, exploring the understanding of what constitutes Jewish art, and the conception of national artists. At the turn of the century a new generation of Jewish artists proclaimed itself and attempted to furnish its own solutions to the problems their predecessors had faced, searching for new methods of national self-expression. Among the artists discussed are Mark Antokolsky, Yehuda Pen, and Moses Maimon.
