Describes Chagall's illustrations for Troyer (Grief), published in Kiev in 1922. Troyer, a collection of verse by Dovid Hofshteyn (David Hofstein), is a pictorial and verbal dirge lamenting the Jewish victims of the civil war pogroms (1919-1920), especially the children and, in a self-reflexive way, the artists themselves.
