Reports on a recently discovered early work, The Fisherman (1918, Private collection), by Archibald J. Motley, Jr. Notes that the work was an assignment in the advanced painting class of the school of the Art Institute of Chicago taught by Karl Buehr. Discusses the difficulties race imposed on Motley's early ambition to be a portraitist.
