Abstract (en)

Considers the themes of exploration and Homer's Ulysses in the paintings of Thomas Moran and other 19th c. American and British artists. In particular, argues that Moran's 1869 Spirit of the Indian (Tulsa, Philbrook Museum of Art) was based on J.M.W. Turner's 1829 Ulysses Deriding Polyphemus (London, National Gallery).
