Discusses the debate among various modernist camps in England between 1910 and 1939, with particular focus on the social activism (derived from William Morris and John Ruskin) of such medieval modernists from the North as William Rothenstein and Herbert Read. Pays particular attention to the works - for the London Underground and other organizations - commissioned by the general manager Frank Pick.
