Abstract
(en)
During the second quarter of the 12th c. the castle at Newark was rebuilt in stone at the instigation of Alexander, bishop of Lincoln. A study of the remaining fabric has revealed more information about domestic accommodation in the two surviving 12th c. sections of the ruins and this is analysed and assessed. Evidence that the ground plan of Alexander's castle was altered during the late 13th or early 14th c., when the riverside curtain wall was realigned, is also presented.
