Abstract (en)
Combs with perforated or indented handles can generally be assigned to the 10th c., although some may be of 11th c. date. Those with hollowed chambers usually occur with perforated examples and would probably have been used to store pungent, aromatic plant remains, sealed with antler or ceramic plugs. This comb type appears to be Anglo-Saxon, and centred in East Anglia, although several related combs with perforated handles are now known from Canterbury.
