Abstract (en)
Compares and contrasts two of Scotland's most famous architects in order to show how their thought and work reflected elements of the cultural and religious environments to which they were exposed in Glasgow and Edinburgh respectively. Shows that each architect displayed "Scottishness" in his buildings and design theories, but in very different ways. The paper was presented at the symposium Nationality and Scottish architecture, held to celebrate the half-way mark of the Buildings of Scotland series at Edinburgh College of Art, 1997.
