Addressing the issue of national character in architecture, discusses how Mackintosh's new language of form was drawn from national culture yet was capable of sustaining international exchange. The paper was presented at the symposium Nationality and Scottish architecture, held to celebrate the half-way mark of the Buildings of Scotland series at Edinburgh College of Art, 1997.
