On the Medici family's patronage of Stefano Della Bella. Studies correspondence (Nov 1650) between Mattias de' Medici (in Siena) and his brother, Leopoldo (in Florence), and identifies a drawing, The Palio in Piazza del Campo, Siena (Florence, Uffizi) as a sketch Mattias commissioned from Della Bella. Also transcribes a previously unpublished letter to Mattias from Della Bella (4 Dec 1650) excusing himself for not having completed the commission. Surmises that the artist never produced a definitive print for Mattias because Leopoldo had become his principle patron. The letters furnish a firm post quem for Stefano's trip to Rome.
