Abstract (en)
Studies the iconography of male and female herms in Ancient and Renaissance art, particularly as they appear in both real and imagined garden settings. Studies especially 16th-c. images of herms, many in the character of Priapus. Posits that the herms that support the pergola in Pieter van der Heyden's Spring (1570), after a drawing by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, in fact symbolize Adam and Eve.
