Abstract (en)
Observes the importance of setting in the appreciation of a work of art, and finds that many modernizing museum directors and designers seem intent on disturbing the "mental sets" that help the viewer see a given work. Discusses the competing demands put on museum architecture and evaluates some recent projects as successful (Munich, Neue Pinakothek), as opposed to more high profile buildings (Atlanta, High Museum; Bilbao, Guggenheim Museum; Berlin, Museum of the Holocaust, among others). Associates much recent museum architecture with theme parks.
