Abstract (en)

Considers the nature of Michelangelo's influence on Rodin, especially in light of French critical notions of the Italian's art. Studies the writings of Diderot, Baudelaire, Stendhal, and Taine as they treat Michelangelo's works as exemplifying either tradition or expressive motion. Discusses motion as the basis of Rodin's sculptural innovations.
