Book accompanying exhibition of baroque Polish art addresses five areas of Polish culture: arts of the the monarchy, the magnate class, and the military, as well as religious artworks, and decorative arts. Includes the essays "Definition and self-definition in Polish culture and art," by Kaufmann; "History of Poland in the 16th-18th centuries," by Zamoyski; "Polish baroque art in its social and religious context," by Ostrowski; "Mechanisms of contact between Polish and European baroque," by Ostrowski; "The impact of the orient on the culture of Old Poland," by Źygulski; and "Architecture in Poland 1572-1764," by Krasny. The symbol of the winged horseman, in part referring to the culture's Sarmatianism, is the organizing theme of the exhibition. Full catalogue entries; 137 works shown.
