Abstract (en)
The Dutch artist's journey to Rome (1530s) resulted in a large number of sketches and drawings, which recorded the city and its artifacts. Ancient sculpture, and the ancient Roman ruins particularly interested Heemskerck. During and after this period, the artist also incorporated aspects of the monuments in his own art. Veldman identifies the influence of the ancient works as well as that of Roman Renaissance art on Maarten van Heemskerck's art (especially his painting).
