Studies allegorical floats in various melodramas and theatrical events of 15th- to 17th-c. Italy. Notes especially representations of Petrarch's Trionfi (1352) in festivals and the visual arts, with a focus on the figure of Time, tracing the transformation of the figure from being a youth to an old man finally associated with the representation of Death. Turns then to the way in which floats advance theatrical action, especially those bearing the figures of Demogorgon or Apollo, or shaped as such ships as the Argonautica.
