Demonstrates through a study of the west facade of the Sainte Chapelle, Paris, and of the devotion to the Passion of Christ in France in the middle ages under Louis IX, that the 13th c. chapel's design was based on that of the chapel of Golgotha, Jerusalem. Traces the history of the reception of relics in Paris (the crown of thorns and a fragment of the cross) and the attempt to draw a parallel between Paris and Jerusalem, and between the king of France and Christ.
