Reflections on the meaning of Blake's installation, shown in an exhibition entitled Black male: representations of masculinity in contemporary American art, held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (10 Nov 1994-5 Mar 1995). Notes that Blake's work was singularly overlooked by critics as well as by the authors of the exhibition's catalogue, and considers why the installation's ambiguous stance toward the subject of the show may have put off viewers and critics.
