Abstract (en)
Discusses the life and work of Willis. Shows how the problematics of the past were resolved, or at least negotiated, by Willis's sensible combination of practical expertise and antiquarian learning. His falling out with the young zealots of the Cambridge Camden Society, however, illustrates the limitations of common sense when confronted by a Gothic crusade.
