The copper-alloy object was found at Three Maids Hill, Headbourne Worthy. It is presumably a mount of some kind and is ornamented with inhabited plant-stems with addorsed creatures, a style found on other objects, some of which can be dated to the first half of the 10th c. The series may have continued into the early 11th c. It contributes to the debate over whether "Winchester style" was first developed in Winchester in non-manuscript art, for the number of locally found objects on which it appears, and the confidence with which it was handled, strongly suggests that the city was indeed a major centre of its production.
