Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the material, technical and iconographical aspects of the Byzantine Holy Face icon (Genoa, S. Bartolomeo degli Armeni), its Byzantine and Italian silver covers (late 13th-17th cs.) and the Medieval textiles (contact relics) applied to the back of the panel. Explores the possible relation of the painted image to other Mandylia and to the archetypal relic of the Shroud of Turin (Turin, S. Giovanni Battista).
