Abstract (en)
Explores the psychological, material, political and religious factors that lie behind the Byzantine interest in and proliferation of acheiropoieta and images made by chance. Examines ancient techniques of cloth dying and marblework used to create "miraculous images". Defines the "Byzantine way of seeing" as the inseparability of faith, rhetoric, art, nature and miracle, and proposes that this mentality lies behind the enthusiasm with which these visual phenomena were embraced.
