On Buonamici's formation as an architect and on his activity in Lucca (until 1634), Malta (1635-1659) and Siracusa (1650-1651). (In 1659 he returned definitively to Lucca). While in Malta, Buonamici served as the resident military engineer to the Knights of Malta, and also designed religious and civic architecture. He was responsible for pioneering the Baroque architectural style in Malta, and for its dissemination through his Maltese assistants, the most prolific of whom was Lorenzo Gafà.
