Prompted by various explications of Paris Bordone's Augustus and the Sibyl (Moscow, Pushkin Museum), including Horace Walpole writing in Aedes Walpolianae (1747), cautions against the "over-assiduous seeking after what [Gombrich] has memorably described as `Topicality in renaissance art'".
