Explores the connections between seen images and felt desires, focusing on the role of law in this interaction over the ages. Discusses idols, icons, and imperial images (Roman and Byzantine), as well as the writings of - among many others - Plato, Kant, Hegel, and Burke. Concludes by examining Whistler's libel case of 1878 against Ruskin.
