Studies moments when 19th-c. connoisseurs trod along the boundary between art and pornography, preparing the way legally for the 20th-c. connoisseur to be part of the liminal determination. Treats the Secret Museum of the Museo Borbonico (Naples) and its publication by M.L. Barré (1840); the British Obscene Publications Act of 1857; the collection of erotica, now in the British Library, assembled by H.R. Ashbee; and Kenneth Clark's The nude: a study of ideal art (1956), among others.
