Recounts the stages involved in the author's ultimately unsuccessful effort to identify Lorenzo Lotto's Portrait of a 37-year-old Man (Rome, Galleria Doria Pamphilj) as depicting Liberale de Pinedel of Treviso. Suspects that De Pinedel might be represented in Lotto's Portrait of an Old Man with Gloves (Milan, Brera).
