Studies the context of art-dealer Torrey's acquisition of Duchamp's painting from the Armory Show (1913), his exhibition of it on the West Coast (Portland and San Francisco), and his work in promoting modern art. Recounts the critical history of the painting during the years it was owned in the Bay Area (to 1919).
