Distinguishes between two types of jars used as wine containers, the gazition and askalônion associated with the cities of Gaza and Ashkelon. These jars held many other products as well. During the early Byzantine period (5th and 6th cs. in particular) the wines of Palestine, especially Gaza, had an international reputation.
