Detailed account of the controversy over how best to preserve or restore the 11th c. remains of Westminster Hall, London, which took place in the 1880s. J.L. Pearson eventually built a new wing and a "cloister" to protect the archaeological remains of the earlier hall, despite intense opposition to his proposal.
