Studies the art patronage and dealing activities of the five Deutz brothers, active in Amsterdam in the mid-17th c.; finds useful information in the accounts book kept, 1649-1654, by their mother Elizabeth Coymans. Concludes that the brothers made significant purchases of paintings by Italian and Italianate Netherlandish artists, as well as of antique sculpture. The collections upon which they based their taste were most likely those of the people with whom they did business: Gerard Reynst, Jan Six and Joannes Wtenbogaert. However, the example of family members, such as their grandfather Balthasar Coymans and their uncle Joan Huydecoper, is likely to have exerted an even greater influence. Artists with whom the brothers had dealings include Rembrandt and Jan Victors, Carel Fabritius and Michiel Sweerts, who also worked on the brothers' behalf in matters to do with the trade in textiles.
