Abstract (en)
Discusses the origins and development of effigial incised slabs in medieval England, focussing particularly on the products of the London-based marblers before the Black Death. Detailed study of both surviving brasses and slabs and old rubbings and antiquarian drawings, suggests that production of incised slabs in the late 13th c. was on a larger scale than previously believed, and that for much of the time in London more than one workshop was producing brasses and incised slabs. Analysis of the stylistic characteristics of these monuments also throws fresh light upon the dating of early brasses and on the wider problems of dating monuments of the Decorated period.
