Abstract (en)
Literary evidence shows that Anglo-Saxon writers and artists were aware of the apocrypha of Mary, and that some were aware of Christological literature in which spinning and weaving were used as metaphors for the Incarnation, and not simplistically as attributes of Mary. At some periods, they were also sensitive to other, negative, connotations of colour, spinning and weaving in the production of inappropriately luxurious dress and the depiction of female status.
