Abstract (en)
Publishes an Entombment group, photographed in 1920 before its dispersal. Reemergence of the two angels (London, Victoria and Albert Museum), offers a chance to reconsider the group as a whole. Style and measurements of the limestone figures suggest a date of ca.1420-1440 and a place of origin within the Burgundy-Champagne-Lorraine axis. Also draws attention to a console with angels holding the Instruments of the Passion, southern Champagne, ca.1500-1520 (London, Victoria and Albert Museum). These figures represent the visual manifestation of a marked growth in attention to the Passion, with devotional practice increasingly focused on Christ's suffering.
