Presents an exploration of the geometrical characteristics of some Columban crosses in Ireland and Scotland. The conclusion that the crosses were designed in accordance with Vitruvian principles, using a system of proportions which included both rational and irrational ratios, and a standard unit of measurement, the Roman foot, is argued from an assessment of the relative dimensions of their features. The methods used to construct the designs are replicated in "blueprints"; the design strategies recognised are compared with those used in other contemporary media.
