Tudhoe Hall and Byers Green Hall offer an avenue into understanding the historical changes known for County Durham from the late 16th c. through to the early 18th c. The houses were both rebuilt successively through this period, and were lived in by "yeoman" and "gentry" families that occupied social positions more specific than these terms alone imply. An interpretation of these houses in close historical context enables an understanding of how people lived out social change.
