Traces the history (1730s-1740s) of the project (ideated and directed by Antonio Baldani, sponsored by cardinal Alessandro Albani and several intellectuals in his entourage, and supported by popes Clement XII and Benedict XIV) for the map of Rome executed by Giovanni Battista Nolli, and published in 1748. Examines Nolli's land survey technique, and the preparatory phases of the project, as well as the publication history and international diffusion of the map. Includes illustrations of the 12 parts of the map and the index. Appendix: biographical chronology for Nolli, and documents, 1736-1756. Introduction by Marcello Fagiolo.
