Discusses Huizinga's project for a study of Dutch 17th c. civilization, which was realized only in 1941 with his book Nederland's beschaving in de zeventiende eeuw. Devotes in this context a chapter to Huizinga's views on the art of that period, particularly painting. Also presented as the author's doctoral dissertation (Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden, 1997).
