Abstract (en)
Studies the early 19th-c. history of Velázquez's Toilet of Venus (London, National Gallery), publishing descriptions of the painting - by Richard Ford, Mrs. M. Stewart Mackenzie, and the collector John Morritt (to Sir Walter Scott) - while it hung at Rokeby Hall. Explores the contacts between the two British hispanists, Ford and William Stirling, reproducing extracts from their correspondence, especially their concern with the market for Old Masters in England. Closes with a letter from Thomas Carlyle to Stirling concerning the latter's Annals of the artists of Spain.
