Abstract (en)

Discusses the style which arose in the 16th c. of applying a small decorative finial, generally made of copper alloy, to the end of a scale-tang knife. Illustrates the first recorded example from Wiltshire of a knife finial with a monkey's head design. It can be dated to ca.1500-1550.
