Recent excavations in African slave contexts at Brimstone Hill have produced well preserved animal bones. Slave craftsmen appear to have manufactured numerous single-hole bone discs that probably served as cores for cloth covered buttons. Bones from sea turtle carapaces and cattle ribs and scapulae were utilized in button core production.
