Abstract
(en)
Reviews the nature and chronology of surviving remains of early architecture in south-east England. Considers the presence on the one hand of features connected to the architectural traditions of Ravenna and perhaps also those of Gaul, and the apparent absence of any derived from Rome on the other. Analysis suggests that its architecture is intimately bound up with the chequered history of the Augustinian mission, and that its remains constitute a more complex and varied body of evidence than has hitherto been supposed.
