Discusses a group of portraits in the collection of Finland's Board of Antiquities. The portraits and portrait miniatures were painted by Joseph Grassi, Cécile Duchène, and Jeanne-Elisabeth Chaudet; they depict Baron Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt of Finland, his mistress Wilhelmine, Duchess of Sagan, her mother Duchess Dorotea of Courland, and Adelaide Gustava Aspasia Armfelt (the daughter of Armfelt and Wilhelmine and nicknamed Vava) and her childhood companion Mina. Discusses the iconography and symbolism in the portrait of the young girls Vava and Mina painted by Chaudet, who was greatly admired for her child portraits.
