Looks at African-American domestic architecture of the 19th- and 20th- centuries, discussing the "comfortable, tasty, framed cottage," the idealized African-American middle-class house. Discusses the appropriation and manipulation of white architectural forms and social values toward countering racism and gaining acceptance into the dominant European American culture of the United States.
