Abstract (en)

Describes the Mormons' promotion of cultural isolation and resistance to influence from the east brought by the transcontinental railroad's arrival in 1869. Describes the Brigham City cooperative's Cabinet Making Shop, founded in response to the increasing availability of furniture from the east. Concludes that despite these efforts, imported furniture came to be desired and accepted.
