Explores and compares the histories and aesthetics of sculpture and installation works, most notably with regard to their connections to perceptual experience and to commodity culture. Argues that certain supposedly distinctive features of installation work, especially those relating to the phenomenological encounter between viewer and object, were already implicit in previous conceptions of sculpture.
