Abstract (en)

Explores the homosocial education of the atelier-Ecole system, examining initiation rites (charges or "hazing" of the atelier) and the concours or competition structure of the Ecole. Through the ritual voyeurism implicit in the stripping of new atelier members, and official policies of the Ecole, women were excluded. Demonstrates how these measures comprised an integrated system which produced a dominant masculine profession of the artist in 19th-c. France.
