Abstract (en)

Examines a large group of late 18th-c. pottery, glass and clay pipes excavated on the site of the former King's Arms, Uxbridge. Reviews the material culture of inns and taverns during the 17th and 18th cs. by comparing excavated assemblages from a number of sites in England and the United States. These closed assemblages probably represent the wholesale clearance of unwanted or damaged crockery and other items, and as such shed light on the social milieu in which they belonged.
