Abstract (en)
Observations on the typologies and functions of images and descriptions of Italy (in guidebooks, maps and printed perspective views of cities) utilized by late 16th-18th-c. northern European travellers to Italy. Explores the varying type and quality of information found in these materials, noting that the maps and illustrations could often be very misleading. Suggests that the true function of the maps and guides was to provide an iconographic repertory, that is, a sequence of easily identified and memorized images, so that the visitor knew what to expect.
